Driver charged with DUI, assault for crash that left pedestrian with life-threatening injuries
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A driver who seriously injured a teenage pedestrian when she hit him with her car over the weekend has been charged with DUI and assault. Julia Vanderpool, 55, of Prestonsburg, was arrested following the crash, which happened around noon on Saturday. According to police, Vanderpool was driving along Route 1428, between Prestonsburg and Allen, when she struck Landon Samons, a senior at Floyd Central High School.Samons was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Thursday’s game against Sayre will mark Johnson Central’s fourth trip to the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament since 2021. This time, the Golden Eagles will face a familiar opponent. Johnson Central and Sayre met May 9 in the Fayette County Invitational Tournament, where the Spartans rolled to an 11-0 win in five innings. Pikeville Fire Dept. rescues dog from cliff
PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville firefighters are being hailed as heroes for going to great lengths — and heights — to rescue a lost dog. A Pikeville family had been searching for their three dogs who had gotten away from their downtown home. On Saturday, one of the dogs, Luna, was spotted trapped on a cliff overlooking the Pikeville Bypass. Pikeville Fire Department used its ladder truck to get up to Luna and bring her down safely. The owner has reportedly been reunited with all three dogs.

Dewey Lake drowning victim identified
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A man who drowned Friday evening at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park has been identified. Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson identified the man as Damon Adams, 22, of Prestonsburg. At 7:22 p.m., Friday, a caller to 911 reported seeing Adams swimming at Dewey Lake, then go under and not resurface.That prompted a massive response from Prestonsburg Fire Department, Prestonsburg Police, the Floyd County Rescue Squad, Floyd County Emergency Management, the Deparment of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
